    Description

Anglo-Saxon sword Fetter Lane, S. VIII.
Anglo-Saxon sword Fetter Lane, S. VIII.
This beautiful one-handed Saxon sword is based on the surviving components of an original artifact: the top of a sword grip and knob excavated during construction work on Fetter Lane, London (hence the name), and donated to the British Museum in 1893. The extremely well-preserved and beautifully detailed original find made of gold silver is an absolutely unique piece of middle Anglo-Saxon history, which is still on display at the British Museum in London today. Due to its construction, shape and intricate ornamental motifs, this finely crafted masterpiece is historically located at the end of the 8th century and is believed to have been the prestige weapon of a rich or noble warrior of Germanic descent.
As the leaf of the royal archaeological piece is missing, a classic mid-age leaf (wide, straight, double-edged) was chosen for this very detailed reconstruction of the sword of Fetter Lane. It is made of hardened EN45 spring steel and features a wide fuller that runs almost its entire length on both sides. Parallel edges are not sharp.
The richly decorated handle is made of brass and mint to give it a silver finish. It consists of several riveted parts (such as the original) and closely recreates the fine designs of the museum piece. The knob cover is made of a domed central element flanked by three smaller lobes and beaded wire patterns on each side. The knob bar and protection have the same three-part design and feature diagonal ribs and an intermediate layer of brass without tin coating. The handle is dense and intricately adorned with different motifs of entwined leafy plants/tendrils and animals on each side (rotating snakes on one side and a bird-like or eagle-like creature on the other).
This early medieval one-handed sword comes complete with a wooden sheath and brown leather with wooden suspension loop (maximum belt width 5 cm) and a mrated brass collar and hood.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation. In addition to its quality as a collection object, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, p. E.g. to complete your costume.
